BRITE Statement on Conference Committee Hearing on Inverse Condemnation & Utility Wildfire Liability
BRITE, ‘Building Resilient Infrastructure for Tomorrow’s Economy,’ reminds legislators that we need to upgrade our laws as well as our grid
SACRAMENTO, CA – Statement from BRITE coalition member, former Sacramento City Councilmember Rob Fong:
“Like all Californians and every member of the BRITE coalition, I know that a safe, reliable and well-managed grid is vital to growing our economy, protecting Californians from the consequences of extreme weather and meeting our state’s clean-energy and carbon-reduction goals. To ensure that we have a safe, reliable and well-managed grid for years to come, we need the legislature to reform the strict liability standard for inverse condemnation. Utilities must be held accountable when they are found to be negligent. However, we can’t make one industry responsible for changing weather, and we can’t make one industry responsible for fires. This problem is bigger than that, and it will require solutions that are bigger than just our utilities.”
The BRITE coalition, a growing group of more than 1,300 organizations and individuals, is dedicated to supporting the governor and bipartisan legislative leadership as they continue their work to find real solutions that support the recovery of losses for victims, enhance emergency response systems, address extreme weather caused by climate change and make sure California has a healthy, stable energy system continuing to power our economy.
